High formaldehyde levels found in some baby furniture

Cribs and changing tables may be exposing babies to unhealthy levels of formaldehyde, according to a new environmental report.

In a report published today, Environment California found a half dozen products — out of 21 nursery furnishings it tested  emitted formaldehyde at levels high enough to trigger allergy and asthma attacks in children.

Cribs and changing tables from Child Craft, Delta, Stork Craft, South Shore Furniture, and Jardine Enterprises had high formaldehyde emissions, the report found.

5/12 - USPS Postage Increasing

On May 12 USPS will adjust prices for mailing services — First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services, and Special Services.

A First-Class Mail stamp will be 42¢. Customers can continue to use the Forever Stamps that they purchased prior to May 12 at 41¢, even after the price change.

Wal-Mart Offers 90-day Generic RX for $10

Wal-Mart Stores said Monday it will offer 90-day prescriptions of some generics for $10, add several women’s medications at a discount and lower the prices of more than 1,000 over-the-counter medications to $4 or less.

Retailers have their eyes on your stimulus check

When customers bring their stimulus checks to a Sears or Kmart cash register, they can convert the amount of the check into gift cards, plus receive a bonus gift card worth an additional 10 percent. To be eligible, the amount of gift cards purchased must be equal to the full value of the stimulus check. The gift cards can be redeemed at any Sears, Kmart or
Lands’ End retail stores or online at sears.com or landsend.com. The promotion is scheduled to last from May 14 to July 19, 2008.  Read more here..

The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR - News) said today that beginning May 2, 2008, customers can receive free groceries through a gift card program available exclusively in Kroger stores. The program allows Kroger customers to exchange their tax refund or economic stimulus checks for a Kroger gift card with an extra $30.00, $60.00 or $120.00 added to it. Gift card amounts correspond to the payment amounts outlined by the Internal Revenue Service for the federal economic stimulus program.  Read more here..

Arby’s owner buying Wendy’s for $2.34 billion

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The owner of Arby’s said Thursday it is buying Wendy’s International Inc. in an all-stock deal worth $2.34 billion that comes after the burger chain’s board rejected at least two earlier offers by the company.

Pam Thomas Farber, 53, daughter of Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, said the family was devastated by the news.

Toy Prices Going Up in June ‘08

Many American families are already digging deep to pay for gas and food. Now they can add toys to the list of products they will be paying more for in 2008.

Mattel , the world’s largest retailer and maker of iconic toy brands such as Barbie, Hot Wheels and Elmo, said Monday that the company will raise prices for its brands in the mid-single digits by June.  Hasbro has predicted price increases as well.

They will raise retail prices mid-year to offset the rising cost of raw materials, production and lawsuits.

Toxic Lead Paint in Plastic Easter Eggs

CLEVELAND —  A chemistry professor who raised an earlier warning flag about toxic lead levels in toy jewelry didn’t have to look far for evidence of similar risks in Easter items such as plastic eggs.

Thirteen of 45 items purchased off store shelves and tested by Ashland University chemistry students had paint made with lead, according to Jeffrey D. Weidenhamer, who has made the toy testing an annual spring rite for his students.

“It certainly demonstrates that the problem is still there,” Weidenhamer said. “2007 was called by many people the ‘year of the recall’ and 2008 that stuff is still on the shelf.”

Tank on Empty

Get a better idea of how far you can go once your gas light goes on. It’s not recommended to go below a half tank without filling up.  For now, this is limited to cars found in North America only.  Interesting!

Circuit City Taking Back HD DVD Players for 90 Days

RICHMOND, Va. —  Circuit City Stores Inc. is getting on the Blu-ray digital video format bandwagon by tripling the period in which customers who purchased a rival HD DVD player can return them. The nation’s No. 2 electronics retailer has instructed its stores to “take care of our customers” and accept returns of HD DVD players within 90 days of purchase.
